Seton Hall 91, Iowa 83: 3 takeaways, highlights

IOWA CITY — Three takeaways from Iowa's 91-83 loss to Seton Hall on Thursday.

1. They're not there yet 

The Hawkeyes have loads of potential, but Thursday night's loss to Seton Hall had all the markings of a team that still has a ways to go to find out what it really is.

Iowa had its moments against Seton Hall (Peter Jok finished with a career high 30 points), but 17 turnovers plagued an offense that found success early in the night. There also was the trouble at the free throw line, where the Hawkeyes finished 19 of 32.

This season will be fun…eventually.

2. Matador defense

Seton Hall had 50 points in the paint. That's way too many, obviously.

The Hawkeyes floated between man and zone defense, but the Pirates found a way to get into the lane with guards and by passing into their big men.

Iowa still hasn't found its feet in team defense, rather getting solid individual efforts from a few players.

They've said they go as their defense goes, and that holds true to a certain extent already.

3. Hack-a-Cook worked

Tyler Cook is very good. His reverse pivot into a dunk in the second half was something special.

He had an offensive night that everyone envisioned for the freshman with 24 points, but had one big gaping hole in his performance Thursday: free throws. It's not a fun topic, but he went 5 of 12 from the line, and Seton Hall saw that soon enough to take advantage.

He didn't touch the ball in the second half without someone getting physical with him. That will become a trend if he doesn't fix that quickly
