The magnitude of the moment didn't register until the moment had passed."It wasn't really brought up until we were on the bus," said Duane Schulte, who earned his 100th win at Cedar Rapids Xavier when the Class 4A top-ranked Saints handled Dubuque Hempstead, 35-7, in their season opener Friday at Dalzell Field in Dubuque.Quinton Scholer ran for two touchdowns and passed for two more.Schulte has amassed a 100-57 mark in 16 years at Xavier. Add four years at Cedar Rapids LaSalle, and he is 125-71 overall."You know, a couple people came up to me on the way home and congratulated me, and it's not just me," Schulte said. "It's the whole staff, and it's the players we've been able to coach. It's not a one-guy deal."The thing that makes this special ... the success we've had, it's come against Class 4A schools, at such a high level."It took a little while for the Saints to get going -- they didn't take the lead until late in the first quarter -- but enjoyed a 35-0 lead by halftime, then cruised from there."Matt Nelson forced a fumble, then Quinton ran in (our first) touchdown, and we got on a little roll," Schulte said.Xavier hosts Cedar Rapids Jefferson next week.
10 TOUCHES, 7 TOUCHDOWNSJack Kline and his buddies put the term "quick-strike offense" to a frightening level.Kline touched the ball 10 times and scored seven touchdowns as Class A No. 1 BGM routed East Marshall, 77-22, at LeGrand. At it wasn't even that close. The Bears led 49-0 after one quarter, 70-0 at halftime, and 77-0 after the first play of the second half.Kline scored three rushing touchdowns, caught a pass for a score and tacked on three punt returns for TDs."I haven't done the math yet, but he had to have had about 500 all-purpose yards," said Bears Coach Jerod Burns. After Kline's first punt return for a touchdown, the Bears' next five scoring drives consisted of two plays, one play, one play, one play and one play.
