Here's a look at the four boys' basketball games Saturday involving area schools. All games begin at 7 p.m.
CLASS 1A
Central City (13-11) vs. Calamus-Wheatland (19-5) at Clinton: Central City has been hurt by injuries to starters Jacob Etten and Mason Nielsen. Both are back in the lineup, which helped the Wildcats post district wins over Springville (42-40), Lone Tree (65-52) and Lisbon (63-46). Center John Rochford leads CC in scoring (15.2 ppg) and rebounding (11.3 rpg). Point guard Jeffrey Stevens averages 12.3 ppg ... Calamus-Wheatland posted a big upset of ranked Clinton Prince of Peace in the district finals, 63-51. Its other district victories were over Bettendorf Rivermont Collegiate (80-46) and Midland (66-52). Senior point guard Ryan Powers is Mr. Everything for his team, leading them in scoring (22.0 ppg), rebounding, assists and steals.
CLASS 2A
Mid-Prairie (18-5) vs. Albia (19-5) at Oskaloosa: Two of Mid-Prairie's five losses were to Cedar Valley Conference rival North Cedar, which lost to Solon in the district finals. Its postseason wins have been over Belle Plaine (65-36), BGM (75-38) and Pekin (56-44). Iowa Hawkeye football recruit Tanner Miller leads the Golden Hawks in scoring at 18.7 ppg. Junior guard Michael Aldeman is second at 13.1 ppg, leading the team in 3-pointers ... Albia picked up district wins over Osceola Clarke (36-27), Pella Christian (42-41) and Davis County (59-51). 6-foot-3 junior forward Curt Coughlin leads Albia in scoring at 12.3 ppg. The teams have one common opponent in Fairfield. Mid-Prairie beat the Trojans, 57-31, and Albia beat them, 60-40.
Dyersville Beckman (14-10) vs. Turkey Valley (18-6) at Manchester: Don't be fooled by Beckman's record, because the Blazers were a 2A team playing in a predominantly 3A Wamac Conference. District wins were over a good Maquoketa Valley team (53-34), North Linn (50-40) and Northeast Goose Lake (39-37). You don't see very many 6-foot-11 kids in Iowa, but Beckman senior center Joe Ament is one of them. He averages a team-best 13.5 ppg and 5.5 rpg. He also has 69 blocks ... Ament could really be key since Turkey Valley's tallest player is 6-foot-3 Justin Bakula. Only three Trojans are 6-2 or bigger. Guard Brad Winter leads the team in scoring at just 10.3 ppg. TV's district wins were over North Fayette (48-36), Starmont (61-40) and MFL/Mar-Mac (50-42).
No. 4 Solon (22-2) vs. No. 6 Danville (22-1) at Bettendorf: Solon is the defending 2A state champion and has advanced to the state tournament three of the last four seasons. District wins this year were over Wilton (64-50), Iowa City Regina (47-38) and 10th-ranked North Cedar (70-56). A quick team that spreads out its offense, Solon is led in scoring by senior forward
Tanner Wentzien (12.8 ppg). It will press and play a unique 1-3-1 trapping zone defense ... Danville's lone loss was in mid-January to Fort Madison Holy Trinity (77-72), which is playing in a 1A substate final Saturday night. The Bears have district wins over Columbus Junction (93-65), Central Lee (49-44) and West Liberty (79-44). Danville prefers an up-tempo game, as evidenced by its 74.1 scoring average, which is second in 2A. Three players score in double figures:
Beau Nelson (15.9 ppg),
Taylor Fraise (14.8 ppg) and
Blake Bonar (10.8 ppg).
