Four-sport athlete Sarah Ryan of Mount Vernon High School has been named Iowa's recipient of the Wendy's High School Heisman Award.Corey Joens of Dunkerton is the male winner.Joens and Ryan were chosen from 55,000 applicants, surviving rounds that narrowed contenders to one male and one female winner from each school, and then to Iowa's group of 20 state finalists.Kiah Stokes of Linn-Mar was a finalist.Ryan is the setter for the Mount Vernon volleyball team that pursues the Class 3A state championship next week. She was on state-champion volleyball, basketball and track teams as a junior, and was a key member of a state-qualifying softball squad.Joens and Ryan will compete against winners from other states for a chance to be named one of 12 national finalists in Wendy's annual quest to find the nation's top scholar-athletes.These 12 students will go on to compete for the national title in New York City on Dec. 10. National finalists will be featured during a televised ceremony on an ESPN network, and will receive a gold medal and $2,000 award for their high schools.One male and one female national winner will receive a Wendy's High School Heisman trophy and Wendy's will donate $10,000 to each winner's respective high school. Additionally, the winners will be recognized during the collegiate Heisman Trophy broadcast on ESPN, Dec. 11.
