CEDAR RAPIDS - Running a total of 370 miles throughout the preseason, Cedar Rapids Xavier junior Steven Culpepper looks to accomplish great things this cross country season.
Culpepper, in his third season on the Saints' team with plans to run in college. is one of the elite runners in the district and is highly ranked in the state. Last season, he received an honorable mention in the district for his running as a sophomore. Having made it to the state meet once already, he is determined to get back and place in the top 10 in the individually.
'We expect to try our hardest and hopefully qualify for state,” Culpepper said when asked about the team's goals.
Times in cross country vary each meet, depending on many circumstances - like the course, weather, which teams run at the meet, the pace set, along with what's on the line such as a spot at state or just a normal meet.
With all of these factors, Culpepper still posts good times with his personal record of 16 minutes, 32 seconds in a 5K. This is a pace of approximately 5 minutes, 20 seconds per mile.
Like all athletes, Culpepper has personal goals he wishes to achieve. His long-term goal is to win state, which is a very big undertaking. These high expectations can be met with hard work and dedication Culpepper has shown throughout preseason workouts.
Culpepper plans on running at the University of Iowa after he graduates next year.
