A complimentary copy of
"An Honorable Run" arrived at my desk Tuesday afternoon.Less than 24 hours later, the 156-page book was fully consumed. The book by Iowa City native Matt McCue chronicled his running career at Regina High School and the University of Colorado. More specifically, it described his relationship with the late Bob Brown, who constructed the Regina cross country dynasty.Brown died in 2007, a victim of pancreatic cancer.McCue, who now lives in New York City, spent a good share of his high school career in friction with Brown. He wasn't patient for stardom. He wasn't a believer in the power of embracing, and Brown was a big hugger. He left for CU with dreams of becoming a national champion.Eventually, the memories of Brown drew him back as the coach became ill. Most of the book was completed before Brown's death.McCue will be present for book signings at Cedar Rapids Running Wild (Sept. 4, noon-3 p.m.) and Coralville Running Wild (Sept. 5, 11:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m.). He'll read excerpts from the book at the Regina gymnasium (Sept. 3, 8 p.m.) and at Prairie Lights (Sept. 8, 7 p.m.). He'll present donated copies of the book to participants of the Regina Fall Fun Run 5K (Sept. 6, 9 a.m.).McCue, a 2001 Regina graduate, and I will speak between now and Labor Day for a Gazette story to run before the book signings.
