Jeff Linder Jan. 21, 2012 5:58 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS -- When Todd Borrison agreed in November to be part of Rivalry Saturday, he was unaware that his team would be playing a top-five team on the road."We just used it as a win-win situation," said the girls' basketball coach at Class 4A second-ranked Southeast Polk. "We knew it would be a game against a great team that would test our toughness."The Rams passed.Whitney Van Wyk scored her only six points on a pair of 3-pointers in a late 8-0 run as Southeast Polk outlasted No. 5 Cedar Rapids Washington, 64-60."We played a great game, but those two 3s just killed us," said Washington's Madison Kramer. "We're right there. Right there."Washington (8-4) held a 51-49 edge when Danielle Franklin hit a long 2-pointer from the baseline with 5:35 to go. Then came the Rams' fateful run.Van Wyk connected from deep, Caitlin Ingle hit a transition jumper, then Van Wyk hit another 3 for a 57-51 Rams advantage. It was the last run in a game full of them."They probably had one more run in them, and if they would have gotten it, they would have beaten us," Borrison said.Washington opened the game with a 10-2 spurt, started the second quarter with a 7-0 surge and began the third quarter with six straight points. Each time, the Rams (15-1) countered."We need to hit free throws better (the Warriors were 8 of 16) and we need to defend the 3-pointer better," Washington Coach Frank Howell said. "But we had a lot more positives than negatives."Each team had four double-figure scorers. Kramer and Abby Herb scored 14 apiece for Washington. Franklin added 13, Jazz Royster 10. Herb grabbed 10 rebounds and Tasha Roundtree dished out 10 assists.Annie Penquite led Southeast Polk with 14 points. Jessica Cole scored 12, Victoria Bricker 11, Caitlin Ingle 10.
