Race director pleased with 25th anniversary event

Race director Mike Regan was able to relax and take a deep breath after the awards banquet, honoring the top runners of the 25th Annual Fifth Season races held Sunday in downtown Cedar Rapids. He had a positive outlook on the milestone event.
“All the events went off really well. We tried some new things,” said Regan, noting the inflatable tents and the ramp party on the top level of a downtown parkade near the finish area. “It seemed like everybody enjoyed the morning.”
The bodies were consistent to those of recent years, according to Regan. Over 2,100 entries were received. The 8K event had 1,051 runners, while the 5K race consisted of 806 participants. The two races had 1,980 people registered with 1,857 finishing. More than 170 runners competed in the youth mile run.
“Overall the finisher total was real similar, just a tad, maybe 50, less than last year,” Regan said.
A familiar face associated with the race's long history was in attendance. Ken Paulsen, who served as the race director for the very first Fifth Season race, was the starter for the 5K and 8K races.
“I'm glad he was here to start the races,” Regan said. “This was his brainchild.”
