Prolific City High runs over Xavier, 52-24

CEDAR RAPIDS - It appears only two things can stop Iowa City High's offense: itself and injuries. That first thing sure hasn't happened, yet, and heaven forbid the last one does.
Quarterback Jasper Washington accounted for four touchdowns, Ronald Thompson had another huge game rushing, and the second-ranked Little Hawks rolled past No. 7 Cedar Rapids Xavier, 52-24, Friday night in this battle of ranked Class 4A clubs.
So much for the highly anticipated dual between City High's powerful offense and Xavier's airtight defense. The Little Hawks rang up 466 yards and half a hundred points against a team that allowed zero points in its first three games.
This was quite a statement.
“A real big win,” said City High's Jeremy Johnson. “This shows that we're here, and we're for real.”
A lot of people already figured the Little Hawks were for real. They've been in the 4A title game two years in a row and won their 32nd consecutive regular-season game last night.
Now everyone should know how for real City High (4-0) is offensively. On his 18th birthday, Thompson took care of the tough inside running, following up his school-record 362 yards last week against Iowa City West with a relatively pedestrian 234-yard, two-touchdown effort.
Washington is the outside speed guy, running for 85 yards and connecting with wide receiver Johnson on a pair of identical 19-yard quick-screen scoring passes. City High blew open a 17-10 halftime game with three third-quarter touchdowns and long TD runs from Thompson (75 yards) and Amos Lavela (53 yards) in the fourth.
“We definitely had to put out a statement tonight,” Washington said. “It all started with the offensive line. They were blocking hard. They did it for us, they blocked for us. they blocked (for) the win. The rest of us just did what we had to do.”
City High ran for 415 yards to increase its season total to a stunning 1,643. A big and powerful offensive line led by tackle Nile Banks (6-foot-4, 277 pounds) is the cornerstone.
“We knew Xavier was a great team, that they hadn't had anybody score on them all season,” Johnson said. “So we wanted to come out and show ... that we can come out and play smash-mouth football. That's what we do.”
“They're a typical City High team,” said Xavier Coach Duane Schulte. “A lot of big, fast strong guys. That showed tonight.”
Quarterback Reggie Schulte threw for 239 yards and three touchdowns for Xavier (3-1), two to Corbin Woods. That included a beauty of a 75-yarder early in the third quarter that made it a 24-17 game.
