Postseason glance, 2 weeks to go
Oct. 13, 2009 10:14 am
Maquoketa at Marion. North Fayette at Cascade. Solon at Iowa City Regina. Elkader Central at Wapsie Valley. Mid-Prairie at Davis County. Lansing Kee at Preston. Six huge games. Six district titles that could be decided Friday. Here's a primer on the races and the clinchers with two weeks to go:
CLASS 4A EAST
Iowa City High (7-0) has clinched the MVC Mississippi Division title. The Little Hawks are one of eight teams in the 4A East that have wrapped up postseason berths. Also qualifying are
Clinton (7-0) and
Linn-Mar (6-1) -- which lead the Mississippi Athletic Conference and MVC Valley Division, respectively -- as well as
Bettendorf (6-1),
Cedar Rapids Washington (5-2),
Cedar Rapids Xavier (5-2),
Dubuque Hempstead (5-2) and
Cedar Falls (5-2).Four MAC teams are 4-3 and in excellent shape:
Davenport Assumption, Davenport Central, North Scott and
Pleasant Valley. It would take two losses and some unforseen circumstances for any of these teams to be shut out of substate. The rest of the 16 qualifiers, if the postseason began today, would be (in order):
Burlington, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Iowa City West and
Cedar Rapids Prairie, all 3-4.
CLASS 3A DISTRICT 3
New Hampton (5-2, 5-0) has wrapped up a playoff berth, and
Oelwein (4-3, 4-1) can clinch a substate spot -- and set up a winner-take-all game with the Chickasaws next week -- if it beats Crestwood at home this week.
West Delaware (5-2, 3-2) clinches with a win at Independence, and
Decorah (5-2, 3-2) clinches with a win over Western Dubuque and if Oelwein beats Crestwood.
CLASS 3A DISTRICT 4
Marion (7-0, 5-0) and
Maquoketa (7-0, 5-0) are substate qualifiers. They play each other Friday at Marion. The Indians are district champions if they win. Maquoketa wins the district if it wins and if
Union (6-1, 4-1) loses to DeWitt Central. Union wraps up a spot with a win. The chase for the fourth spot remains a free-for-all.
CLASS 3A DISTRICT 5
Williamsburg (6-1, 5-0) has wrapped up a berth. If
Clear Creek Amana (5-2, 4-1) beats Fort Madison, the Clippers snag a spot and put themselves in position to win the district with a Week 9 win at Williamsburg.
Mount Pleasant (5-2, 3-2),
Fairfield (5-2, 3-2) and
Washington (4-3, 3-2) are in a deadlock for the other two spots, and Friday's Fairfield-Washington winner probably solidifies a berth.
CLASS 2A DISTRICT 4
North Fayette (7-0, 5-0) and
Cascade (7-0, 5-0) are assured substate berths, and play for the district title Friday at Cascade.
Sumner-Fredericksburg (5-2, 3-2) is in if it wins at Jesup;
Monticello (5-2, 3-2) claims a spot if it defeats Dyersville Beckman.
CLASS 2A DISTRICT 5
Iowa City Regina (7-0, 4-0) and
Solon (7-0, 5-0) are substate qualifiers, and they meet tonight with district leadership on the line. Solon wins the district if it wins. If Regina wins and
Center Point-Urbana (5-2, 4-1) -- another clincher -- defeats Camanche, the title chase will go to Week 9. The fourth berth will go to
North Cedar (3-4, 2-3),
Wilton (3-4, 2-3) or
West Liberty (2-5, 2-3). North Cedar plays both of the other hopefuls in the final two weeks.
CLASS 2A DISTRICT 6
Mid-Prairie (6-1, 5-0),
Davis County (6-1, 5-0) and
West Burlington-Notre Dame (5-2, 4-1) have qualified, but there's still wrangling to be done for the title. Mid-Prairie plays Davis County this week, WB-ND next week. A Davis County win would clinch the title for the Mustangs.
Sigourney-Keota (4-3, 3-2) wraps up the fourth spot if it wins at Mediapolis.
CLASS 1A DISTRICT 3It's five teams for four spots.
South Winneshiek (7-0, 5-0) owns one of them.
Turkey Valley (6-1, 4-1) is sitting pretty; the Trojans are postseason-bound if they beat Conrad BCLUW, and would set up a potential district-title game next week with South Winn.
Denver (6-1, 4-1) plays both of the other two hopefuls --
Gladbrook-Reinbeck (4-3, 3-2) and
Aplington-Parkersburg (5-2, 3-2) -- in the final two weeks.
CLASS 1A DISTRICT 4
Clayton Ridge (6-1, 5-0) is the district champion if it beats winless Alburnett at home.
Starmont (5-2, 4-1) also has a postseason ticket under its arm while
Northeast (5-2, 4-1) is in if it beats the Stars tonight. The race for fourth is a deadlock between
Bellevue (4-3, 2-3),
North Linn (3-4, 2-3) and
Maquoketa Valley (2-5, 2-3). Bellevue has the easiest schedule of the three.
CLASS 1A DISTRICT 5
West Branch (7-0, 5-0) has wrapped up a spot, and looks to be on its way to the district crown. Five teams are in the hunt for the other three spots.
Eddyville-Blakesburg (5-2, 4-1) is in if it wins one of two road games -- against
Wapello (5-2, 3-2) or
Belle Plaine (5-2, 3-2). Those teams both have destiny in their own hands as well, with
Durant (3-4, 2-3) and
Pekin (3-4, 2-3) chasing.
CLASS A DISTRICT 4
Elkader Central (7-0, 5-0) and
Wapsie Valley (6-1, 5-0) are substate qualifiers, and the winner of their showdown at Fairbank is the district champion.
Postville (4-3, 3-2),
Lisbon (4-3, 3-2) and
East Buchanan (4-3, 3-2) are in competition for the other two slots. Postville is at Lisbon this week, at East Buchanan next week.
CLASS A DISTRICT 5This is a district in which every team is still in play for postseason qualification.
WACO (4-3, 4-0) is the district champion if it defeats Cardinal (4-3, 2-2) Friday.
Danville (4-3, 4-1) also has wrapped up a bid. Other than that, much is yet to be decided.
CLASS A DISTRICT 6
North Tama (7-0, 4-0) and
North Mahaska (7-0, 4-0) have wrapped up posteason berths and will play for the district title next week at Traer if North Mahaska beats
BGM (6-1, 4-1) Friday at New Sharon. If BGM wins, the Bears nail down a postseason berth.
HLV (3-4, 2-3),
Montezuma (4-3, 1-3) and
Garwin GMG (2-5, 1-3) are in play for the fourth slot.
8-MAN DISTRICT 4
Preston (7-0, 5-0) and
Lansing Kee (6-1, 5-0) play for the district lead Friday at Preston. If Preston wins, it is the district champion. If Kee High wins, a Week 9 game between Kee High and
West Central (6-1, 4-1) could determine the champ. West Central is in if it wins at Central City this week.
Dunkerton (4-3, 2-3) has the inside track for the fourth spot.
