Pair of QBs lift Coe past Loras, 36-10

CEDAR RAPIDS – This isn't nearly the scope of C.J. Beathard-Jake Rudock. Nothing else around here matters football-wise, right?
But the Coe Kohawks might just have a quarterback controversy of their own brewing. Perhaps 'controversy” isn't the correct way to put it.
Both Josh Rekers and Gavin Glenn produced goodness in Coe's 36-10 win Saturday afternoon over Loras at Clark Field. That's the bottom line.
The Kohawks (2-2) took their Iowa Conference opener despite fumbling the opening kickoff away and spotting the Duhawks (1-3) the first 10 points.
'You give them the momentum like that, you're asking for trouble,” said Coe Coach Steve Staker. 'But the big thing, I felt, was the defense did what they had to do. They made some stops, didn't let them in the end zone again. Defense gives your offense some time to get going.”
That offense was somewhat unexpectedly led by a pair of QBs.
Rekers is a two-year starter who came into Saturday ranked second in the Iowa Conference in passing yards. He got the majority of the time, completing 13 of 25 passes for 157 yards and scoring a touchdown on a 1-yard keeper.
But sophomore Gavin Glenn, a transfer from Division II Minnnesota-Duluth, provided a spark. With Loras up in the second quarter, 10-3, he produced a touchdown drive finished off with his 3-yard pass to Elijah Phillips.
Glenn scrambled for 19 yards on a 3rd-and-16 play in that drive. In the third quarter, he moved around in the pocket long enough for Kevin Martinez to get open in the end zone, the 24-yard touchdown play giving Coe a 24-10 edge.
Glenn finished 8 of 9 for 105 yards through the air.
'As long as we're winning, that's really my main focus,” Rekers said of the QB flip flop. 'For us to put points on the board, that's what I like to see.”
'I don't know. I think it's a feel thing,” said Glenn. 'One of us might be on one day, one of us might not be. It's a good thing for the offense. When one of us is not doing well, the other can come in and make something happen.”
Staker was asked how this rotation deal might would work moving forward. If there is going to continue to be a rotation deal, of course.
'My son (offensive coordinator Tyler) and I talked last week about what we should do,” the coach said. 'I said we need to give them both an opportunity. One quarterback is not really a scrambler, while the other one bought us some time there, had a really nice run and gives us another dimension. We'll probably do that again, put two quarterbacks in there. If one has some rhythm going, he'll probably be our guy. I think they are both pretty good.”
Coe knows it's going to have to be more than pretty good next week when eighth-ranked Wartburg (4-0) comes to town.
'We had a hiccup there in the beginning, had a slow start today,” said running back Sam Lahr, who had 110 yards rushing and a touchdown. 'We've got to get rid of that because we've got a big game next week.”
