Omaha 98, Iowa 89: 3 takeaways
Dec. 3, 2016 3:25 pm
IOWA CITY -- Three takeaways from Iowa's 98-89 loss to Omaha on Saturday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Hawkeyes dropped to 3-5 with their fourth straight setback.
1. All of the points
Iowa has now allowed opponents to score 90 or more in half their games this season. In the four straight losses, Iowa has given up 32, 54, 24 and 40 points in the paint.
Coach Fran McCaffery saw improvement defensively against Notre Dame, but it regressed in a big way on Saturday. Whatever you point to – youth, stamina, etc – the Hawkeyes haven't stopped much in weeks.
2. Offensive holes
Iowa players have said repeatedly they have no concerns about offense; that they can score. Well, that was true for three players Saturday. Peter Jok had 33, Jordan Bohannon had 20 and Cordell Pemsl had 18. The rest of the Hawkeyes combined for 18 and went 6 of 25 from the field.
Given how much pressure Jok is already facing, that will only increase if more Hawkeyes don't start to score.
3. New ground for Omaha
Nebraska Omaha had never beaten a Big Ten team before Saturday's game, having come in 0-11. The Mavericks didn't luck into anything either – the Hawkeyes trailed for 25:48 of the game.
In terms of non-conference home losses, Iowa took its worst in a while, having been favored by 11 points coming into the game.
