CEDAR RAPIDS - A strong building requires a good foundation.
Cedar Valley Christian School laid the first brick last week by picking up the program's first win. Despite a 67-26 loss to Clarksville Friday night, the Huskies continued building a program.
'You have to keep your eyes on the goal; you can't just focus on that moment,” quarterback Kenan Ulmer said. 'You have to think this is making me better for the next play.”
Clarksville struck early when Zach Sommerfelt rumbled 45-yards for his fifth touchdown of the season with just 23 seconds off the clock.
'The first drive of the game, you just put it behind you,” said Ulmer. 'It was one fluke in the game, one big play.”
Instead of hanging their heads, the Huskies responded. Cedar Valley Christian assembled a drive of 60 yards over four minutes. Ulmer capped the drive with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Tom Scroggs.
'What you saw in that four-minute drive is what we are really capable of,” Coach Ed Betsworth said.
'These kids, it's going to take them a while to understand that when someone drives against you, you can't let down.”
The Indians took control from there. Sommerfelt racked up 125 total yards in the first half, and added two more touchdowns to extend the Clarksville lead to 59-6 at halftime.
The Huskies drove for a pair of third quarter scores. Ulmer hit Colin Heeren on a 45-yard touchdown pass to make the score 59-12, and Ulmer broke free for an 11-yard touchdown run.
'We came out and just forgot about the first half and played a new half,” Ulmer said.
