Here's a look at Iowa and Iowa State's likely draft selections this weekend with capsule information from Ourlads Scouting Services:
IOWA TE C.J. FIEDOROWICZ
Height/Weight: 6-5 1/2, 265
Ourlads' synopsis: Will break into the league as a blocking tight end and special teams coverage and blocking weapon but has underdeveloped receiving tools. He has the intelligence to learn pass defenses and has the speed to clear out from wide receivers on underneath routes. Can improve his run-after-catch ability. Grades out as a solid backup with ascending skills. Can make the overhead catch from the slot.
Ourlads' grade: Third/fourth round
Ourlads' projection: Third round, Detroit (76)
Scott's projection: Third round, Cleveland (83)
IOWA LB CHRISTIAN KIRKSEY
Height/Weight: 6-1 1/2, 233
Ourlads' synopsis: Good initial quickness and downhill ability. Explosive. A natural knee bender taking on blocks. Throws his body around and is very aggressive moving downhill. More quick than powerful but can turn the quickness into power. Athletic with good change of direction. Shows ability to play in space. Closes well in pursuit and has good range. Solid in pass drops and has good zone technique.
Ourlads' grade: Third/fourth round
Ourlads' projection: Third round, Pittsburgh (97)
Scott's projection: Fourth round, Washington (102)
IOWA LB JAMES MORRIS
Height/Weight: 6-0 1/2, 241
Ourlads' synopsis: An instinctive linebacker who can make adjustment calls when an offense shifts of comes up with unexpected formations. Mentally and physically tough. Good lateral movement and downhill ability to work through a congested area. A knee bender who uses his hands well. Can slip a block to make a tackle. Processes information quickly with his strong academic background.
Ourlads' grade: Fifth/sixth round
Ourlads' projection: Fifth round, San Francisco (170)
Scott's projection: Fourth round, Detroit (136)
IOWA LB ANTHONY HITCHENS
Height/Weight: 6-0, 240
Ourlads' synopsis: A productive linebacker with good read and react quickness and instincts. A sideline-to-sideline player who doesn't give up on a play. Keeps leverage on the ball. Aggressive in the run game. Breaks up quickly on the ball in front of him. Productive on special teams' coverage. Needs to work on zone coverage skills, drop and turn ability, body position and burst after final move.
Ourlads' grade: Seventh round/free agent
Ourlads' projection: Free agent
Scott's projection: Seventh round, Dallas (248)
IOWA T BRETT VAN SLOTEN
Height/Weight: 6-6, 300
Ourlads' synopsis: Plays with a good base and zone blocking technique. The former tight end gets good depth in pass protection and can run a speed rusher by the quarterback. Gets some push to create an upfield seam for the backs to run in. A developmental player with draftable qualities. Not a people mover or road grader type blocker. Needs more power and strength in the run game to anchor bull rush.
Ourlads' grade: Seventh round/free agent
Ourlads' projection: Free agent
Scott's projection: Seventh round, San Francisco (243)
IOWA STATE LB JEREMIAH GEORGE
Height/Weight: 5-11, 234
Ourlads' synopsis: Led Big 12 tackles, a two-down run player and special teams guy. Feisty and competitive in his play. Will go for the strip as he is tackling a ball carrier. An explosive ball of muscle. Takes good angles and finishes pursuit. Plays square and with good balance. Fills the inside running lanes with quickness and leverage. Active and always around the ball. Projects to a 4-3 weakside linebacker.
Ourlads' grade: Seventh round/free agent
Ourlads' projection: Free agent
Scott's projection: Seventh round, Cincinnati (252)
IOWA STATE P KIRBY VAN DER KAMP
Height/Weight: 6-4, 202
Ourlads' synopsis: Good sized angular left-footed punter. Has had success punting in the swirling winds of Jack Trice Stadium for the past four years. Placed 27 punts inside the 20-yard line last fall. For his career he punt 99 punts inside the 20-yard line and had a career 71 punts sail over 50 yards. Played in the Senior Bowl where he averaged 46.9 yards on eight punts. Good follow-through and leg pop.
