CEDAR RAPIDS - There's a new team atop Class 1A in the latest Gazette boys' basketball rankings.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck has ascended to the top spot, moving up after last week's top two teams (Central Lyon and Maple Valley/Anthon-Oto) lost. The Rebels are coming off a great football season that saw them advance to the Class A state championship game.
Central Lyon dropped to number four after a loss Tuesdsay night to Class 2A Sheldon. Maple Valley/A-O lost to 3A Denison-Schleswig and is fifth.
The other top-ranked teams remain the same: Iowa City West in Class 4A, Waverly-Shell Rock in 3A and Iowa City Regina. Regina - which is playing without two starters, out with injury - had a pair of close games last week, including an overtime win over Bellevue.
Cascade lost Tuesday night to Anamosa and dropped to sixth. Monticello is right behind the Cougars at seventh.
West is 6-0 headed to the holidays and a solid number one. West Des Moines Dowling mmoved from sixth to second, replacing North Scott, which lost over the weekend to Rock Island (Ill.) by two points.
Linn-Mar and Cedar Rapids Kennedy enter the rankings at seventh and ninth, respectively. Both are 5-1 and play each other to begin the new year.
Class 3A is as topsy-turvy as it gets, with several ranked teams losing last week. The top three remain the same in Waverly-Shell Rock, Dubuque Wahlert and MOC/Floyd Valley.
