Monday's boys' state basketball tournament games

Mar. 4, 2012 8:00 pm
CLASS 1A QUARTERFINALS
Lisbon (20-6) vs. Storm Lake St. Mary's (25-0)When: 3:45 p.m.Where: Wells Fargo Arena, Des MoinesScouting Report: Lisbon's first-ever state tournament game is against the defending 1A state champion. Welcome to the show, boys. St. Mary's is ranked No. 2 (behind Danville) and has a potent one-two punch in forward Kennedy Drey and guard Luke Lenhart. The 6-foot-6 Drey averages 17.5 points per game and 8.1 rebounds and shoots 60.6 percent from the field. Lenhart averages 18.7 points. Both are juniors. Lisbon will have to have a big game from point guard Ben Knake, who has been Mr. Everything for his team. He leads the Lions in points, assists, steals and blocked shot. You wouldn't expect Lisbon to be intimidated by the environment, considering most of its players were members of the school's Class A state championship football team.
IOWA MENNONITE (22-4) vs. BOYDEN-HULL (23-2)2 p.m.Where: Wells Fargo Arena, Des MoinesScouting Report: This 3-6 game features traditional powers that lost in last year's 1A quarterfinals. IMS got hot at the end of the regular season and has won 16 of its last 17 games. It will try and play in transition, as it ranks third in 1A in points per game (70.0) and first in field-goal percentage (56.5). All five starters average double figures in scoring. B-H usually has a lot of height, but not this team, though leading scorer Bryce Moss (15.1 ppg) is 6-foot-5 and could be a tough matchup for IMS. The outside scorer will likely come from guard Taylor Francis, son of head coach, Bill. He averages 12.3 ppg and has taken a team-best 136 3-pointers. By the way, Boyden-Hull is the third seed, IMS the sixth.
When:
CLASS 2A QUARTERFINALS
MFL/MAR-MAC (23-1) vs. SIOUX CENTER (18-6)6:35 p.m.Where: Wells Fargo Arena, Des MoinesScouting Report: Fifth-ranked MFL earned the top seed in 2A thanks to a 20-game win streak. Leading scorer C.J. Mason (16.6 ppg) is the tallest guy on the team at 6-foot-3 but is a wing player who can get points in a variety of ways. Forward Brandon Hertrampf (11.7 ppg) also is 6-3 and is the Bulldogs' main interior threat. This is the 16th state tournament appearance for Sioux Center, though its first since 2004. Five of the six Warriors losses were to clubs at this tournament, including twice each to 1A Boyden-Hull and 3A top-seeded MOC/Floyd Valley. T.J. Buyert (16.7 ppg) and Micah Lassen (11.2 ppg) are the leading scorers and have hoisted a combined 221 3-pointers.
When:
MOUNT VERNON (20-4) vs. NORTH CEDAR (20-4)8:15 p.m.Where: Wells Fargo Arena, Des MoinesScouting Report: These two nearby rivals met early in the regular season, with Mount Vernon winning, 59-50. Big subplot here is how an undersized Mount Vernon club will cope with 6-foot-6 North Cedar swingman Jordan Hay and 6-10 center Josh Sander. Hay averages 23 points and nine boards and had 27 points in the regular-season matchup between the clus. Mount Vernon's big three are guards Jake Timm, Jack Keleher and Micah Russell, who combine to average 39 points per game. Three of MV's losses came when Timm (who had 19 points and 10 assists in the regular-season game against NC) was out of the lineup recovering from an appendectomy. There's another neat father-son subplot here, with Timm the son of Mount Vernon head coach Ed Timm and starting guard Kyle Jackson the son of North Cedar head coach Scott Jackson.
