Mid-Prairie girls on track for return to the top of 2A
Sprinting crew helps lead Golden Hawks to 2nd-place finish at Williamsburg Invitational; Solon sweeps titles

Apr. 6, 2021 10:10 pm, Updated: Apr. 6, 2021 10:37 pm
WILLIAMSBURG — The COVID-related cancellation of last year’s track and field season interrupted Mid-Prairie’s championship run.
But it probably didn’t end it.
“It was really unfortunate we didn’t have a season last year,” senior sprinter Maddie Edgington said. “But we have a lot of girls back.
She smiled.
“And we have What’s-Her-Name.”
What’s-Her-Name is freshman distance ace Danielle Hostetler, who didn’t compete Tuesday at the Williamsburg Invitational meet at Bob Murphy Stadium. But in Hostetler’s absence, you saw what else the Golden Hawks have.
A lot.
Edgington was on two winning events, and Mid-Prairie was a competitive second to Solon in the girls’ team race.
The Spartans scored 135 points, the Golden Hawks 114.
Mid-Prairie won 2A state titles in 2018 and 2019, and would have been significant favorites last year had a season gone through.
The Golden Hawks’ middle- to long-distance prowess is well known. But they have speed, too.
“We do a lot of speed work. Amber (Swart) and I lead the speed workouts,” Edgington said. “I haven’t run an open 100 since I was a sophomore.”
She won that in 13.27 seconds.
Solon swept the team titles. The boys prevailed with a deep squad, tallying 109 points despite winning just two events.
Benton boys win 6 events
Benton Community claimed six events and compiled 85 points.
Junior Jacob Brecht was a four-event champion for the Bobcats, sprinting to wins in the 100 (11.21) and 200 (22.52), running on the sprint medley relay and anchoring the triumphant 400 relay.
Teammate Aiden Harris led the 800 throughout, finishing in 2:01.03.
“I like to stride out, and I don’t pay attention to who is behind me,” Harris said. “The first lap felt slow. I thought I’d be able to keep that pace throughout.”
Meet Mount Vernon’s Laura Swart
Like all sophomores, Mount Vernon’s Laura Swart is a varsity rookie on the track. She was a triple-winner (sprint medley relay, 1,600 relay).
"I ran the 800 and 1,500 in middle school, and I was all right,“ Swart said. “The hurdles are a nice change. I really like them.”
With no track last spring, Swart found other outlets.
“I was on my Ripstik (skateboard) a lot,” she said. “I hung out with my family. I walked the dog.”
Other stars Tuesday:
- Lance Sobaski of Washington (Iowa) anchored the Demons’ winning distance medley relay, then came from way back to capture the 1,600 in 4:39.06.
- Mid-Prairie’s Cain Brown cleared 6 feet 4 inches in the high jump, and came extremely close at 6-6 ½.
- Emma Bock led the Solon girls’ title run, anchoring the winning 3,200 relay and leading a 1-2 finish in the 400.
