Meyers to join Cyclones in Waco to watch ISU-Baylor game
Oct. 23, 2015 5:00 pm
AMES — Iowa State gathered on its practice field Wednesday to have an impromptu birthday celebration for a teammate they haven't seen in nearly two months.
That was the day Mitchell Meyers turned 22 years old.
Meyers is at his home in The Woodlands, Texas, going through a round of chemotherapy to treat Hodgkin's Lymphoma, for which he was diagnosed in February.
ISU coach Paul Rhoads spoke to Meyers on his birthday, and could feel the excitement in his voice about being able to attend the Iowa State game at Baylor on Saturday with his dad and brother.
Rhoads added he is hopeful Meyers will be able to return to classes in January, but he anticipates Meyers returning to campus to attend the Cyclones' final two home games this season.
'He's extremely brave. He's very mature. He's become quite intelligent about what he's going through,' Rhoads said. 'At the same time he knows he's in the hands of the Lord and the doctors and medical team that are working on him. He's ready for an answer.'
