May. 12, 2014 3:19 pm
Brent Metcalf beat the world's top-ranked wrestler and was named the nation's top amateur wrestler for his effort.
The former University of Iowa two-time NCAA champion earned USA Wrestler of the Week honors Monday, following his 11-8 win over Russia's top-ranked 143-pounder Magomed Kurbanaliev at the Beat The Streets USA vs. The World dual in New York City's Times Square on May 7.
Metcalf took a 4-0 lead on a takedown and two points for back exposure off a gut wrench. He took the lead for good late with the same series, adding a point for a pushout.
Metcalf is the current 143-pound U.S. World Team member, making the team in 2010 as well. He won the U.S. Open title in April and is the top seed for the U.S. World Team Trials on May 31-June 1 in Madison, Wis. He will face the winner of the challenge tournament in a best-of-3 series for the 2014 World Team spot.
