NEW YORK — Former University of Iowa two-time NCAA champion and current U.S. World Team member Brent Metcalf claimed an impressive win Wednesday, dropping the world's top-ranked 143-pound wrestler Magomed Kurbanaliev, of Russia, 11-8, during the Beat The Streets USA vs. The World dual in Times Square.
Metcalf closed similarly to how he started, scoring a two-point takedown and continuing into a two-point gut-wrench for a late 10-8 lead. He added a push out to close the scoring in the final minute. It was the second four-point move, opening with the same move for an early 4-0 lead. Metcalf scored another takedown for a 6-4 lead after the first of two periods.
The exhibition is sandwiched between two major competitions for Metcalf. He won a U.S. Open title last month and will compete in the World Team Trials May 30-June 1 at Madison, Wis.
