MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa -- Derek McConnell made quite the debut for Mount Mercy last season. After leading the Mustangs in scoring, the junior from Belleville, Ontario, was named to the 2010-11 Midwest Collegiate Conference Men's Golf first team by a vote of league coaches.
McConnell, a transfer from Kirkwood Community College, led the Mustangs with a 76.1 stroke average over 19-and-a-half rounds. That scoring average is tied for seventh on Mount Mercy's single-season charts. He was in the top 20 in 10 of 11 tournaments, with seven top-10 finishes and six top-five finishes.
McConnell helped the Mustangs win five tournaments, including the Loras Invitational, Clarke Fall Classic, Metro Tournament, Statesmen Fall Classic and the Mount Mercy Spring Invitational. His low round was an even-par 72 in the final round of the MCC Championship, where he finished fifth. He tied for first at the Mount Mercy Spring Invitational, was runner-up at Loras and placed third at the Statesmen Fall Classic.
