[Men's Golf] McConnell is medalist, earns league honor

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Senior Derek McConnell was medalist on Sunday at Eagle Ridge North Golf Course in Galena, Ill., and a day later was named the Midwest Collegiate Conference Men's Golfer of the Week for Sept. 26.

McConnell, a first-team all-conference performer last year, followed an even-par 72 with a career-best 3-under-par 69 in the final round of the UD/Bishops Buffet Invitational on Sunday for a three stroke victory over teammate John Milne, Central's Brent Goodenow and Eric Basalacchi of Carroll (Wis.).

Milne was the first round leader after opening with a 69. He shot 75 on day two for a 144 total. Freshman Finnian O'Doherty carded a 78 and 72 to tie for 16th at 150. Senior Declan Hasson (80-76=156) tied for 38th and sophomore Ryan Schrimper (79-80=159) tied for 53rd. Individually, freshmen Jack South tied for 50th (78-80=158) and Jacob Selander tied for 53rd (75-84=159), while junior Ryan Schlueter tied for 71st (81-80=161).

The Mustangs will be in action again this weekend at the Viterbo (Wis.) Fall Invitational. Play begins on Sunday at noon and Monday at 9:00 a.m. at La Crosse Country Club in Onalaska, Wis.
