Megan Gustafson becomes Iowa's all-time leading scorer

No one in Iowa basketball history has scored more points than Megan Gustafson. And she still has at least 18 games to go.

The All-American senior post passed Ally Disterhoft on Iowa women's basketball's all-time scoring chart in the 16th-ranked Hawkeyes' 84-68 loss Sunday at No. 22 Michigan State. Gustafson hit a layup with 1:25 to play in the second quarter, a basket that gave her 10 points for the game and 2,104 points for her career.

She didn't stop there. A third-quarter free throw gave Gustafson 2,117 career points, more than Roy Marble, who holds the all-time Iowa men's basketball record with 2,116.

Gustafson finished the game with 30 points (2,124 career) on 11-for-19 shooting and 14 rebounds, but the Hawkeyes (9-3, 0-1) were outscored 47-27 by the Spartans (11-1, 1-0) in the second half.

Disterhoft set the Iowa women's record in 2017 — when Gustafson was a sophomore — and finished with 2,102 points. Cindy Haugejorde, who totaled 2,059 points from 1976 to 1980, is third on the list.

'Sometimes, if you're going to have a record broken, you can be a little salty about it. But the fact that it's Megan, I'm very happy for her,' Disterhoft told The Gazette's Jeff Linder last week. She definitely has earned it.'

Gustafson scored 352 points as a freshman, then broke out with 628 her sophomore season and 823 last year. She's also the program's career leader in rebounds, with 1,116 heading into Sunday's game.

'It's exciting to reach a milestone, but the focus remains on the team, and on winning,' Gustafson said last week.
