COLLEGE PARK, Md. — The third-ranked Maryland Terrapins were just too much for the Iowa women's basketball team, beating them, 100-81, Sunday in front of 7,988 fans at the Xfinity Center.
Maryland (21-1, 9-0 Big Ten) went on two big scoring runs to bury Iowa (13-8, 4-4). The first came midway through the second quarter. The game was tied 30-30, and Maryland went on an 18-3 run.
Then Iowa had whittled a 20-point halftime deficit down to 11 with 2:24 left in the third quarter when Maryland went on an 18-7 run to put the game out of reach.
'We knew going into this game, having played Iowa two weeks ago just how tough and aggressive they were going to be,' Maryland Coach Brenda Frese said. 'They showed nothing less and fought for 40 minutes. They really came in prepared and ready to play.
'I thought we were able to settle in once we were able to stop turning the ball over and missing defensive assignments. I thought our starters did a tremendous job moving the ball and being aggressive against their zone.'
Five players scored in double figures for the Terps, led by Brionna Jones with 28 points. Shatori Walker-Kimbrough scored 18 points and Brianna Fraser had 17 points.
Maryland shot 60 percent (39 for 65) for the game.
Iowa also had five in double figures, led by Kathleen Doyle, who set a career-high with 21 points. Ally Disterhoft added 16 points, Tania Davis 13, Makenzie Meyer 11 and Megan Gustafson 10.
Iowa returns to action Thursday when the Hawkeyes host Rutgers at 7 p.m. in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
