Maryland knocks off Iowa
Jan. 28, 2016 8:06 pm
COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Iowa's 13-game Big Ten winning streak came to a screeching halt at the Xfinity Center Thrusday night in a 74-68 loss to Maryland.
With the game in the balance, Maryland freshman Diamond Stone gave the Terrapins an insurmountable lead in the final two minutes. Stone took a post feed from Jake Layman for a dunk to put Maryland up four points. One possession later, he stripped Iowa point guard Mike Gesell, which turned into a Jared Nickens basket and a 66-60 lead.
Stone then salted the game away with a rebound from a Jarrod Uthoff 3-pointer and converted one of two free throws with 39.5 seconds left to keep Maryland's lead to six points. Iowa was unable to come closer than four points in the final minute.
Iowa (16-4, 7-1 Big Ten), which is ranked third by the Associated Press, drops its first league game since an overtime loss at Northwestern on Feb. 15, 2015. No. 8 Maryland (18-3, 7-2) stays just a game back of Big Ten co-leaders Iowa and Indiana in the loss column.

Maryland's ball movement was difficult for Iowa to contain in the first half. The Terrapins notched 10 assists on 17 baskets and often found the open man on an extra pass.
The Terrapins led by eight early, then Iowa rallied to take a 29-28 lead after Ahmad Wagner was fouled at the basket. But Maryland quickly retaliated.
On Maryland's next two possessions, Rasheed Sulaimon and Melo Trimble drilled back-to-back 3-pointers to push its lead to 34-29. Iowa's Mike Gesell cut into the deficit with a layup, only to be followed by a Nickens layups and another Sulaimon 3-pointer to put the Terrapins up 39-31.
Dom Uhl brought Iowa within four points with a 3-pointer, but Sulaimon scored again to provide the 41-35 halftime edge.
Layman defended Iowa forward Jarrod Uthoff with diligence in the first half, holding the Big Ten's leading scorer to three points and 0-for-5 from the floor. The Hawkeyes, who hit better than 44 percent from 3-point range in Big Ten play, knocked down just two of nine in the first half.
Iowa opened the second half on a 7-0 run. Uthoff missed his first three shots after halftime but finally got on the board with a putback. Peter Jok followed with a 3-pointer, then Uthoff dished to center Adam Woodbury in the lane for a layup to give the Hawkeyes a 42-41 lead.
Maryland responded with its own run, including four points from the free-throw line, to go ahead 47-42.
The teams traded leads four times throughout the second half before Stone's run.
Sulaimon and Robert Carter each scored 17 points for Maryland. Jok led Iowa with 14. Uthoff finished the game with nine, his fewest output of the season.
