We're at C.R. Washington for the season-opening duals for Metro wrestling. It's a busy night here. In addition to wrestling, Washington is hosting a swim meet and a girls basketball game. The schedule is Maquoketa vs. C.R. Washington, Maquoketa vs. Marion and then Marion vs. C.R. Washington.(Refresh for updates)Warriors receive a pin from JP Mercado at 130 in the opening match, but Shiloh and Dakota Snyder follow with back-to-back pins and the cards have a 12-6 lead. Make that 18-6 after Matt Koppess with a pin at 152.Teams exchange forfeits, making it 24-12, Maquoketa.Maquoketa adds a decision from Ryan Horcher (145) and a forfeit. Dixon Giriffith (189) gets a pin for Washington, which receives a forfeit at 103. 33-24 Cardinals with Hwt. and 112 going on now and two more matches after that.Troy Neagle with a pin at 112. Had a lead and surrendered it in the third, but got a reversal and put the Maquoketa wrestler on his back for a fall.Tyler Burrell wins 3-2 in OT, scoring a reversal in the second 30-second tiebreaker. The meet is tied 33-33 with Jordan Eicher and Haven Miller at 119. Washington's John Rockwell is receiving a forfreit at 125, so Maquoketa needs a pin. trying to figure out criteria and it looks like it will be difficult to determine a tiebreaker.Miller wins 9-4 but Washington holds on for 39-36 win.Marion vs. Maquoketa coming up soon.Marion and Maquoketa are underway, starting at 135. Maquoketa sandwiched a Dakota Snyder tech. fall between two forfeits and lead 17-0 after 145 pounds.Koppes gets a fall for Maquoketa and then Marion receives a forfeit at 160. Maquoketa leads, 23-6.Maquoketa's Josh Holtz with a fall at 171 and Marion follows with consecutive falls from kaleb Tuetken and Kyle Grandon at 189 and 215. Grandon dominated before getting his pin, but Tuetken trailed 2-1 before rolling and catching his opponent on his back for a second-period pin.Maquoketa received forfeits at Hwt.and 112, and no match was contested at 103. Marion received a forfeit at 125 and Levi Lochner added a pin for Marion at 130. We're at 41-30 Maquoketa with one match remaining. Scout Morehouse vs. Haven Miller at 119.Miller wins, 4-0, and Maquoketa wins the dual, 44-30.The night will be moving into the third and final dual shortly. C.R. Washington vs. Marion.Only six matches will be contested. EIGHT FORFEITS from two schools with student bodies big enough to qualify for the largest class in the state.Washington opens with a fall my Kaiser herz at 140. Warriors get a forfeit and lead 12-0.Marion gets a fall from Hunter Banes at 152 and then the Indians receive three straight forfeits and lead 24-12 going into 215 before Washington will collect three forfeits.Dixon Griffith holds on for an 11-9 decision at 215. After the next rounds of forfeits we have Washington leading 33-24. The Warriors will get a forfeit in the final match at 135, so you can figure it's a 39-24 lead (although unofficially). Marion needs a sweep and bonus points to pull it out.Just experienced a pet peeve. Just watched a wrestler turn to the crowd and take advice from someone I assume is a parent instead of consulting the coach who was trying to get his attention. Totally undermines coaches when this is allowed to happen.Marion's Scout Morehouse wins 6-2. Washington leads 33-27. Marion needs two pins to force a tie.If Washington wins, I'll have to do some serious digging because I can't recall the last time they went 2-0 to start a season. Maybe the Wade King era?Alex Hunter won 20-8 at 125 for Marion. Washington leads, 33-31, with one match left to wrestle. Doesn't appear Marion has anyone to throw out at 135, so Washington will win no matter what happens here.Levi Lochner gets his second pin of the night and Marion goes up briefly, 37-33, but the final forfeit gives Washington its second win, 39-37.
