Major League Baseball draft through 2nd day, no Iowans selected

Jun. 7, 2013 6:17 pm
Major League Baseball has gone through 10 rounds of its 2013 amateur draft, and no players from Iowa have been selected. That includes Cedar Rapids Washington senior A.J. Puk, who was rated by most experts as a top-100 talent nationally. It appears the left-handed pitcher will pursue a collegiate career at the University of Florida as a two-way player instead.Several highly considered prep players have not been drafted, likely casualties of MLB's signing bonus system, in which all picks are assigned a dollar value and all clubs are assigned a certain amount of money to spend on their top 10 round draftees. That has increased the likelihood of several top preps deciding to play college baseball.Muscatine senior pitcher Derek Burkamper also was speculated as a possible pick in the first 10 rounds but was no drafted and said on Twitter that he will play college baseball at Nebraska instead. The final 30 rounds of the MLB draft will be conducted Saturday.
