Local drivers compete in ASA Midwest Tour race

NEWTON - Five drivers with ties to Hawkeye Downs Speedway raced in the ASA Midwest Tour Sandvik Coromant 150 Friday night at Iowa Speedway.
Thor Anderson, from Bondurant, has been regular at Hawkeye Downs in recent years and was the highest qualifier for the race that kicked off the tracks second NASCAR Nationwide Series weekend this season. The Nationwide U.S. Cellular 250 is Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
Janesville's Brad Osborn led the late model division at Hawkeye Downs before Friday's scheduled races. He qualified 21st. Mason Mitchell, of West Des Moines, was third at Hawkeye Downs and qualified 25th.
Two local drivers were also in the field. Griffin McGrath, of Cedar Rapids, is eighth in the ASA Midwest Tour points standings with three top-10 finishes in seven starts. He experienced engine problems during qualifying and started 28th.
Tim Plummer, of Norway, made his ASA Midwest Tour debut. He suffered transmission trouble and qualified in the final spot of the 29-car field. Plummer is the defending late model and modified season points champion at Hawkeye Downs.
