Lindell Wigginton staying at Iowa State

AMES — Iowa State men's basketball received good news on Wednesday.

Freshman guard Lindell Wigginton announced on his Twitter account he will withdraw his name from the 2018 NBA Draft and return to the Cyclones.

'I chose to come back to Iowa State because I didn't want to settle,' Wigginton said in a statement released by Iowa State sports information. 'I know where I can help take our team this season and I want to be considered a winner. I am determined to be one of the best guards in college basketball and want to have a chance to play in March Madness and compete for a national championship for the best fans in college basketball.'

Wigginton had a standout year as a freshman, averaging 16.7 points and 3.7 rebounds, shooting 40 percent from 3-point range.

'I'm glad that Lindell had the opportunity to go through the experience of testing the waters for the NBA Draft,' Iowa State head coach Steve Prohm said in the statement. 'With that being said, we are extremely excited to have Lindell in our program for his sophomore season. After a tremendous freshman season, I think Lindell has a chance to be not only one of the top players in the Big 12, but in the country. I'm looking forward to him helping lead our team.'

With Wigginton's return, Iowa State's future remains bright.

The Cyclones return five of their six top scorers from last season — Wigginton, Cameron Lard, Nick Weiler-Babb, Solomon Young and Zoran Talley.

Iowa State will add transfers Marial Shayok and Michael Jacobson, who sat out last season. Prohm said last season that Shayok, a guard, looked like he was the best player on Iowa State's team. Jacobson, a 6-foot-9 forward, averaged 6.0 points and 6.2 rebounds starting all 31 games for Nebraska before he transferred after his sophomore season.

The Cyclones also welcome an impressive recruiting class, ranked No. 26 by 24/7 Sports, highlighted by Chicago standout forward Talen Horton-Tucker. He'll be joined by guard Tyrese Haliburton, forward Zion Griffin and big man George Conditt.
