Lime-green Layloni a triple winner for Warriors

CEDAR RAPIDS - Layloni Beard has a bright headband for every season.
“It's orange for basketball, yellow for volleyball,” she said.
It's lime green for track. It should be gold.
Beard won the 100-meter hurdles and anchored two winning relays as Cedar Rapids Washington ran away with the team title of the Warrior Invitational girls' track meet Tuesday night at Kingston Stadium.
Washington won seven events and tallied 134 points. Linn-Mar was second with 88, followed by Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Cedar Rapids Prairie (85 apiece).
“I got out (of the blocks) a little shaky (in the 100 hurdles), but after that, it was pretty good,” said Beard, one of two hurdling stars for the Warriors - Brooke Foreman is the other.
“We have great teamwork. We know each other, and we're willing to compete against each other.”
Beard and Foreman were side by side in the 100 hurdles. Foreman led early, then Beard reeled her in and finished in 15.55 seconds.
That duo, along with Taylor Vogel and Alissa Oney, motored through the shuttle hurdle relay in 1:06.84.
Foreman is the state leader in the 400-meter hurdles, but was disqualified in that event Tuesday for stepping around a hurdle.
While Beard and Foreman are Washington's decorated veterans, Jasmyne Jones is the rising rookie. The freshman captured the 100 and 200 (13.40 and 27.34 seconds, respectively), then led off a 400-meter relay that Beard anchored.
It was hard to tell which Jones ran faster - her leadoff leg or her sprint across the Kingston FieldTurf to the finish line to cheer Beard home. The Warriors were clocked in 51.48 seconds.
“This feels great,” Jones said. “When I came in here, I was a little nervous that I would be taking somebody's spot. I don't want to ruin anybody's mood.”
Jones was part of a McKinley Middle School 400-meter relay that set a city middle-school record last year. Now it's high school and varsity track. It's been a smooth transition.
“I don't want to sound cocky, but I'm a good runner. I enjoy it a lot,” Jones said. “It's great to be accepted by such a great team and to run with them.”
Carolyn Newhouse of Linn-Mar swept the distance events, completing the 3,000 in 10:43.88 and the 1,500 in 4:55.22.
