CEDAR RAPIDS - Managing, Xavier sophomore Nick Koechner, 'is a run way to learn a new sport.”
Koechner is a manager for the Saints' sophomore boys' basketball team.
'I like being able to hang out with friends and help out the basketball team,” Koechner said.
Koechner began his managing career at the start of the season.
'I talked to Coach (Brad) Joens and they were in need of someone to help out,” Koechner said.
Koechner began recording games, attending practices and running the scoreboard during practice. Koechner does not take his responsibilities lightly. He's taken it upon himself to ensure that every game is recorded correctly.
Koechner also has contributed in other ways.
'(Nick) brings us doughnuts some days,” sophomore post Ryan Jasper said.
Koechner also does his best to maintain a positive attitude, through thick and thin.
'(Pumping up the team) is an important part of my job,” Koechner said.
His philosophy appears to be working.
'Nick's great.” Jasper said. 'He's fun to be around.”
Before his start as manager, Koechner played eighth-grade basketball at Regis Middle School, where he learned 'the fundamentals of the game.” Koechner has taken his knowledge and used it to improve this year's team.
'The season has gone very well,” he said. 'We have a very tough team of guys who are willing to push their limits and practice very hard each and every day.”
