Late 3-point play lifts West Virginia over Iowa State

Bria Holmes completed a 3-point play with four seconds left to lift West Virginia past Iowa State, 54-52, on Saturday at WVU Coliseum in Morgantown, W.Va.
Iowa State (16-10, 7-8 Big 12) scored just 16 points in the second half.
The Cyclones went over eight minutes without a basket. They ended up shooting just 5 of 22 (22.7 percent) after intermission.
'Sometimes you get down and things aren't going your way, but you have to continue to fight and play defense and get after it,” West Virginia Coach Mike Carey said. 'We did that today. They only scored 16 points in the second half. I thought we did a good job defensively, and we handled their pick-and-rolls pretty well in the second half.”
Linda Stepney led the Mountaineers (16-11, 6-9) with 14 points and six assists. Averee Fields had 12 points.
The Mountaineers never led by more than three points. The Cyclones led by 17 points in the first half. Iowa State was up at half, 36-26.
Nikki Moody led Iowa State with 15 points and five assists. Seanna Johnson had 14 points and eight rebounds.
Iowa State is just 2-6 in its last eight games.
The Cyclones return home to face Texas Tech (15-11, 5-9) on Tuesday. ISU has three more games left in the regular season.
