Kentucky bans postgame handshakes after its prep games

Oct. 8, 2013 5:50 pm
Can you ever see something like this happening in Iowa?
The Kentucky High School Athletic Association issued a directive Tuesday that bans postgame handshakes after all KHSAA-sponsored competitions in seven sports. Citing more than 20 fights and other altercations in the past three years, postgame handshakes are forbidden in baseball, basketball, football, soccer, softball, volleyball and wrestling.
'It is disappointing that this action has become necessary, but enough incidents have occurred both in our state and in others that the necessity has arrived,' the KHSAA said in a statement.
If teams decide to shake hands after a game anyway, the KHSAA will not punish them if there are no incidents. If there are incidents, the KHSAA will fine the athletics departments of the schools.
