Meet The Gazette’s Hawkeye Football Reporter Madison Hricik.

How long have you been at The Gazette?

I’ve been in this role since August 2025. It’s been very exciting, very fast paced and I love the fact that I got here and was able to jump right into football season.

What were you doing prior to coming to The Gazette?

I’m originally from Ashburn, Virginia which is about 45 minutes outside of Washington D.C. I had just finished my master’s program at Syracuse University, studying broadcast and digital journalism in the sports media and communications cohort. Before that, I had been living up and down the east coast covering college athletics.

What do you like about being a sports reporter?

I love the energy and the passion that I get to have and also that I get to experience from fans. I love traveling to different stadiums across the country and seeing what other schools get to do, and I love how excited people get about this sport. My favorite thing about any sports writing is just seeing the passion that fans have for the athletes and for the program that they support.

Hawk Off The Press is a weekly podcast and newsletter that I do, and it allows me to not only just show off my personality as a beat writer, but also give some insight on what’s going on around the conference, what is happening outside of football itself, and also allow other people an opportunity to share their perspectives on Hawkeye Football, Hawkeye Athletics across the board. And you’ll never know who we might end up bringing on for an episode.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I’m a big bookworm and I am also a musician, so occasionally I will sing. I’m slowly teaching myself guitar as well. I got my first one about a year and a half ago.

Share a fun fact about yourself.

When I was in high school, I had the opportunity to sing the National Anthem at a Washington Nationals baseball game.
