Jok: ‘I made a mistake’

NORTH LIBERTY — Iowa sophomore basketball player Peter Jok appeared contrite and admitted he made an error in judgment after a drunken-driving arrest last spring in Iowa City,

Jok, a 6-foot-6 shooting guard, made his first public comments since he was arrested for operating while intoxicated on his moped on April 26. He was pulled over for appearing unsteady, was missing a taillight cover and had no safety flag displayed. His blood alcohol content was .082, slightly above the legal limit to operate a motor vehicle in Iowa.

'I made a mistake and I need to learn from it and move on and not make the same mistake again,' Jok said Thursday night before his Prime Time League game at the North Liberty Recreation Center.

He pleaded guilty on May 2.

Jok said he and McCaffery have yet to talk about any potential penalties. Last month McCaffery told The Gazette he has no plans to suspend Jok.

'It's whatever the protocol is for the student code of conduct,' McCaffery said. 'I'm not going to do anything other than what is called for.'

Iowa's athlete code of conduct does not trigger an automatic suspension after the first alcohol offense.

Jok played in 27 games last season and averaged 4.4 points. He scored 10 points in 16 minutes against Tennessee in Iowa's overtime NCAA tournament loss.
