IOWA CITY - The New York Jets selected Iowa State linebacker Jeremiah George in the fifth round of Saturday's NFL draft.
George, who stands 5 feet, 11 inches and weighs 234 pounds, was a first-team all-Big 12 pick last season. He led the Big 12 in tackles with 11.1 per game, which ranked fourth nationally. He was just the third Cyclone to lead the league in tackles.
After the season, George was named the team's most valuable season. He collected team-highs in tackles (133), tackles for loss (12), sacks (3.5), forced fumbles (three) and interceptions (two). All of his tackles for loss were in Big 12 action. He started 17 consecutive games and recorded 10 or more tackles in nine games last year.
George is Jets' first linebacker selected in this draft. New York currently has 10 linebackers on its roster. It's the second consecutive year a Cyclone linebacker was drafted in the fifth round. Last year, A.J. Klein was selected by Carolina.
'I think if he gets a chance, he'll end up sticking because I think he's got that kind of competitiveness,” said Dan Shonka, general manager and national scout for Ourlads Scouting Services.
