Jefferson's Sweeney to have Tommy John surgery

Aug. 13, 2009 4:26 pm
Cedar Rapids Jefferson senior shortstop Kellen Sweeney may not play in Sunday night's AFLAC All-American High School Baseball Classic in San Diego because of a torn ligament in his right elbow that will require Tommy John surgery.
Sweeney, whose brother, Ryan, plays for the Oakland Athletics, was considered a possible top-five round draft pick in next year's MLB amateur draft. He said he injured his elbow in Jefferson's substate tournament game last month at Marshalltown.
Renowned orthopedic doctor
James Andrews will perform Sweeney's surgery Aug. 26. Read tomorrow's Gazette for a complete story.
