J-Hawks' vow: 'We'll get them'
Jeff Linder Apr. 25, 2014 3:35 pm
DES MOINES -- Jasmine Blue gritted her teeth and made a promise. "We will get them at state," Blue said. "We WILL get them at state." Cedar Rapids Jefferson settled for second place in the girls' 800-meter relay Friday at the Drake Relays. Davenport Assumption edged the J-Hawks, running in 1:41.71, the fourth-fastest time in state history. Jefferson's Abilene Ranschau, Blue, Morgan Meese and Lucy Schneekloth clocked in at 1:42.04. This is Jefferson's signature race, one in which the J-Hawks set an all-time Iowa best at last year's state meet. This one stung a little. "Obviously, we really wanted to win that one," Schneekloth said. "Assumption ran a great race, but we dropped 2 seconds off our time (this season). That's really all you can ask for." The J-Hawks plan to outrun the Knights here in four weeks, but it will have to be indirectly. Jefferson is a 4A school, Assumption 3A. Thus, they won't run head-to-head at state. The J-Hawks posted a strong day Friday, also getting a second place from Madison Ranschau in the 100-meter hurdles and a third-place effort from its sprint medley relay. Other area runners-up were Stephanie Jenks of Linn-Mar in the 800 meters and Kiera Washpun of Iowa City High in the long jump. Ranschau was busy Friday morning; she ran the third-best time in the 100 hurdles prelims, led off the sprint medley, then returned to better her time in the hurdles. Mary Young of Urbandale won it in a Drake-record 14.30; Ranschau was next in 15.01. "I'm really happy with second place," Ranschau said. "I tried my best to get out of the blocks as fast as I could, then be quick over the top of the hurdles." Jenks returned to the track a day after setting an all-time Iowa best in the 3,000. "I could definitely feel that 3,000 in my legs today," Jenks said. "My start was awful, miserable. I kind of got boxed in." Kaley Ciluffo of Pleasant Valley won the race in 2:10.23. Jenks (2:11.65) edged Clayton Ridge's Jasmine Staebler (2:11.73) for second. Washpun was consistently very good Friday, jumping farther than 18 feet on five of her six attempts. Her best (18-4 3/4) was her third jump. Jalynn Roberts-Lewis of Des Moines Roosevelt jumped 19-0. "When I warmed up, I wasn't hitting the board, but I didn't let that bother me," Washpun said. "I didn't think about it; I just went for it." Roberts-Lewis also claimed the 100-meter dash, and Assumption also won the sprint medley relay. Kiana Phelps of Kingsley-Pierson/Woodbury Central was the discus champion.
