Oct. 24, 2016 2:35 pm
University of Iowa senior Ally Disterhoft is a member of the 10-player preseason all-Big Ten women's basketball team, as chosen both by the coaches and the media.
A 6-foot guard from Iowa City, Disterhoft is on pace to become the program's all-time leading scorer. She has scored 1,542 career points, which ranks 11th all-time, and has scored in double figures in 78 of 84 career games.
Disterhoft joins Indiana's Tyra Buss, Maryland's Brionna Jones and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough, Michigan's Katelynn Flaherty, Michigan State's Tori Jankoska, Nebraska's Jessica Shepard, Northwestern's Nia Coffey and Ohio State's Kelsey Mitchell as preseason all-Big Ten picks by both the coaches and the media. Penn State's Teniya Page was voted to the coaches' preseason squad, while Minnesota's Carlie Wagner was chosen for the media list.
Mitchell is the preseason player of the year after ranking third in the nation in scoring at 26.1 points per game. She was a consensus first-team all-American last season.
Two-time defending Big Ten champion Maryland was chosen by both the coaches and the media as the preseason favorite. The Terrapins, coached by Cedar Rapids native Brenda Frese, return three starters from a team that posted a 31-4 record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Ohio State (26-8, NCAA Sweet 16) is picked second, followed by Indiana (21-12) in the media poll. The Hoosiers share the No. 3 spot with Michigan State (25-9) in the coaches' poll.
