IOWA CITY — Iowa will play at Notre Dame as part of the Big Ten-ACC Challenge, the league announced on Tuesday.
Both teams qualified for the NCAA tournament and competed in Brooklyn as part of two different regions. Iowa (22-11) beat Temple and lost to eventual national champion Villanova in a second-round game. Notre Dame (24-12) beat Michigan, Stephen F. Austin and Wisconsin before losing to eventual national runner-up North Carolina in the Elite Eight.
The game is held Nov. 29 in South Bend. The time and network will be released at a later point. CBSSports.com was first to report the match-up.
Iowa returns one starter in senior Peter Jok, who averaged 16.1 points a game as a second-team all-Big Ten selection. The Irish return three starters: V.J. Beachum (12.0 ppg), Steve Vasturia (11.4 ppg), and Bonzie Colson (11.1 ppg).
'We always look forward to this event and this year is no different,' Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery said in a statement. 'I have the utmost respect for head coach Mike Brey and the Notre Dame basketball program. Notre Dame is extremely well-coached and is consistently one of the top teams in the country. This will be a good road test for our basketball team early in the season.'
It will be just the teams' fourth meeting in 46 years but third in last four seasons. Notre Dame topped Iowa 68-62 in a consolation round game at the AdvoCare Invitational match-up last November in Orlando.
The Hawkeyes beat the Fighting Irish 98-83 in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge three years ago at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Notre Dame leads the all-time series 8-6 and won the schools' last match-up in South Bend, Ind., 77-68 as part of the preseason NIT on Nov. 17, 1990. The teams also met in a consolation NCAA game after the 1970 season, in which Iowa won 121-106. The Hawkeyes scored 75 points in the first half against the Irish.
Iowa coach Fran McCaffery served as a Notre Dame assistant coach for 11 seasons under Digger Phelps and John MacLeod. McCaffery's wife, Margaret, was a three-year starter and scored 1,312 points the Fighting Irish.
Iowa has won its last three Big Ten-ACC Challenge match-ups after posting a 2-10 record in its previous 12 appearances.
