Two former Iowa State men’s basketball teammates meet on opposite teams Wednesday at the Olympics in Paris.
Tyrese Haliburton is an NBA All-Star point guard with the Indiana Pacers who is a member of the United States team. Marial Shayok is a guard playing for South Sudan. Their teams play Wednesday at 2 p.m. (CT) in a preliminary round game.
The two were teammates on the 2018-19 Cyclones that won the Big 12 tournament and went 23-12.
Both teams won their opening games, with Shayok scoring 15 points in South Sudan’s 90-79 win over Puerto Rico Sunday. Haliburton didn’t play Sunday in the U.S.’ 110-84 victory over Serbia. Nor did the Boston Celtics’ Jayson Tatum. Both are healthy and available for Wednesday’s game.
Haliburton was a freshman and Shayok a senior at Iowa State in 2019. Shayok was a second-round draft pick of the Philadelphia 76ers that year, but played in just four games for them. He has played in the NBA G League and on teams in Turkey and China. He averaged 19.1 points for Shandong of the Chinese Basketball Association last season.
Haliburton just finished his fourth NBA season, averaging 20.1 points and a league-high 10.9 assists for the Pacers.
The U.S. squeaked past South Sudan in a July 20 exhibition game in London, 101-100, after trailing by 16 points. Shayok had a game-high 25 points.
Also on South Sudan’s squad is former Iowa guard Peter Jok, who had 11 points and six rebounds against Puerto Rico. Jok is a veteran of 78 G League games, eight of them in the 2023-24 season. He has played professionally in France and Spain.
Another member of the 2019-20 Cyclones, George Conditt IV, plays for Puerto Rico. He scored 13 points against South Sudan Sunday, making all six of his field goal tries. He played for Portland’s G League team last season, and recently was named the Defensive Player of the Year in Puerto Rico’s Baloncesto Superior Nacional league.
Conditt recently signed to play in Spain next season.
