Iowa seeking deputy AD
Jun. 13, 2014 5:10 pm
IOWA CITY - University of Iowa athletics plans to hire a deputy athletics director sometime this summer.
The job posted on May 16, and the deadline for applications already has expired. Sports Information Director Steve Roe described the process as 'ongoing.”
The position reports directly to Athletics Director Gary Barta and is responsible for providing administrative oversight for Iowa's day-to-day operations. Among the required qualifications includes seven years of senior level athletics management experience, preferably at the NCAA Division I level. UI athletics also prefers the candidate has experience as an athletics director or a senior associate athletics director at the Division I level.
Iowa currently does not have a deputy athletics director.
One industry source said as many as four interviews already have been conducted and the candidate pool was very strong.
The athletics department's management structure is headed for a significant transition period within the next few years. Associate athletics director Mark Abbott, who handled legal affairs, retired earlier this year and several other associate athletics directors are approaching retirement age. The new hire would help ease that transition period.
