IOWA CITY - Iowa quarterback C.J. Beathard earned the nickname 'Sunshine” from Hawkeye fans because his long, flowing hair resembled the character with the same nickname in the football movie 'Remember The Titans.”
Like 'Sunshine” Ronnie Bass midway through the movie, Beathard has cut his hair. Unlike Bass, however, Beathard did it willingly for a cause.
Beathard, a junior, announced late Thursday on Instagram that he chopped his hair to help fight against cancer. Here's what he wrote:
'Three years later and it was finally long enough to give it to Wigs For Kids! Gonna miss the flow but glad I could help out a good cause! #noflow #cancersucks #gohawks”
Beathard, who hails from Franklin, Tenn., is slated to start this year for Iowa.
According to its website, Wigs For Kids provides hair replacement systems and support for children 'who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy, radiation therapy, Alopecia, Trichotillomania, burns and other medical issues at no cost to children or their families.” The non-profit organization has provided wigs to childrend for more than 30 years.
