IOWA CITY - David Solis took his turn hanging 10 on the wave of momentum established by his Iowa City West wrestling teammates Saturday afternoon.Following pins by Nick Moore and Derek St. John, Solis stuck Marian (Ill.) Catholic's Caleb Dyson in 3 minutes, 3 seconds at 171 pounds to give the Trojans the lead for good in a 45-26 victory. The come-from-behind win capped a perfect 5-0 day for West at its own Lepic Duals. The Class 3A second-ranked Trojans won the overall title as the only undefeated squad in the talented eight-team field."It was very important," Solis said of his fall. "I helped boost my teammates up with the win. I had to do what I had to do. It just all went in the rotation."West found itself in a 26-12 hole after University of Iowa recruit Dylan Carew's 3-2 loss to Elias Larson at 145 pounds. Carew couldn't manage a takedown in the match.Marion Catholic didn't have the momentum for long. Defending state champions Moore and St. John recorded back-to-back falls in 2:49 and :58, respectively, at 152 and 160. West scored five straight pins and won the final six matches. The Trojans also posted notable victories over 3A fourth-ranked Southeast Polk, 37-28, and 3A ninth-ranked Council Bluffs Lewis Central, 44-20, in pool competition.Marian Catholic finished second in the dual tournament, followed by Lewis Central and Fort Dodge, a late replacement for Class 2A top-ranked Ballard (Huxley), which couldn't make the trip from central Iowa because of the weather.n Contact the writer: (319) 339-3177 or john.riehl@gazcomm.com
