CEDAR RAPIDS -- Low numbers will cost the Cedar Valley Christian its season opener. But for now, it won't cost the Huskies the season.Because of manpower issues, CVCS has canceled its Week Zero football game against Don Bosco, a game that was scheduled for Aug. 16 and would have been the first game in the state this season."When we agreed to the Week Zero game, we thought we would have more kids," said CVCS principal Jeff Pospisil. "Some decided not to play. We got some more kids, but they didn't know we would have a game before school started, and made vacation plans."Cedar Valley Christian plays eight-man football and currently has a 12-player roster, Pospisil said. He plans on the school fielding a team -- the season now begins Aug. 24 at HLV. The home opener is Aug. 31 at LaSalle Middle School. The program marked its first year in 2011, playing a four-game varsity schedule as an independent. The Huskies were 0-4.This year, CVCS is a member of Eight-Man District 4. Despite the Week Zero cancellation (it will not be recorded as a forfeit), the school has a full nine-game schedule."As long as we don't have any injuries, I don't see any problem with fielding a team," Pospisil said. "I wouldn't want to start a game with eight, nine or 10 players."
