Hunters Ridge team captures state golf title

MARION - Home course advantage proved to be a good-luck charm for the 54th Iowa Women's Club Team Championship.
The Hunters Ridge Golf Course quartet of Julie Buerman, Peggy Garrett, Carol Klocke and Katie Wenthe won by the event by a whopping 14 strokes in the gross portion of competition. The group posted a 237, a 21-over par total to clinch the title.
The top three scorers on the team all finished in the top five overall. Buerman led the group with a second-place finish after firing a 77, Garrett followed at third (78) and Wenth capped the group with a tie for fifth (82).
Meg Monson of Veterans Memorial Golf Course in Clear Lake was the low individual for the tournament, posting a 75.
4 AREA TRIATHLETES ADVANCE TO WORLDS
MILWAUKEE - Ian Hoover-Grinde and Ron Gierut of Cedar Rapids, Joanna Hall of Coralville and Daniela Williams of North Liberty all earned spots in the triathlon world championships after placing high in the USA Triathlon National Age-Group championships last weekend.
Williams placed third in the 35-39 age group, covering the Olympic-distance race (1.5K swim, 40K bike, 10K run) in 2 hours, 10 minutes and 33 seconds. Gierut placed fourth in the 55-59 group in 2:11:05, Hoover-Grinde was fifth in 16-19 in 2:00:37, and Hall sixth in 30-34 in 2:16:24.
The World Championships are next month in Cozumel, Mexico.
LECONTE ‘OUTSTANDING' AT BOXING EVENT
CEDAR RAPIDS - Mitchell LeConte of the Cedar Rapids Boxing Club was named 'Outstanding Boxer” at a recent show at Veterans Auditorium.
LeConte beat Justin Hill of Des Moines in a heavyweight bout.
Other CRBC winners were Nate Velesquez at 141 pounds, Jacquie Cuddeback at 119 and Anthony Thomas at heavyweight.
HIAWATHA'S MANNING WINS NATIONAL TITLE
MINNEAPOLIS - John 'Ajax” Manning of Hiawatha won gold at the National Senior Games recently, capturing the 80-84 age group shot put competition with a toss of 42 feet, 10 inches.
Manning also won gold at the Western Iowa Challenge, Iowa Senior Games and an event in Roswell, N.M., where he set the New Mexico record with a put of 39-2 1/2. He also set an Iowa record (42-5) at the Western Iowa Challenge.
Dolfi Kalm of Lisbon and John Spitzer of Iowa City also won gold at the National Senior Games, capturing the 70-and-over men's volleyball title on a Minnesota team.
