Hot Hawks trip Mount Pleasant

CEDAR RAPIDS -- Shoot the ball well, and the world smiles along with you.

Cedar Rapids Prairie hit 52.2 percent of its field goal attempts, and Cyerra Hutchins posted a double-double as the Hawks tripped Class 4A ninth-ranked Mount Pleasant, 54-38, at the Rivalry Saturday girls basketball event at the U.S. Cellular Center.

"Our posts really played well today," Hutchins said. "We were a little shy to begin with, but once we got into the flow, everything was working pretty well."

Prairie (6-4) led from start to finish, shooting 56 percent (14 of 25) from the floor in building a 32-21 halftime lead.The margin never ventured below nine points in the second half, and Prairie answered that with a 10-0 run to put the game away. Hutchins started that run with a steal and a layup, then ended it with a 3-pointer.

Hutchins collected 19 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.

"Cyerra was great," said Prairie Coach Steve Doser. "Both ends -- offense and defense. She really led us. And we rebounded the ball well."

"I really liked our focus today, and I liked the way we handled the ball."

Hutchins' boardword led Prairie to a 32-22 rebounding advantage.

Olivia Usher added 12 points for the Hawks. Emilie Rotter scored eight.

Taryne Shull and Kelsi Phipps scored 11 points apiece for Mount Pleasant (7-3).
