Honeymoon over before it begins for Bayne

Jun. 7, 2013 8:28 pm
Trevor Bayne laughed while saying cornfields aren't the usual setting for a honeymoon.
But, that's the possible drawback of being a 22-year-old race car driver.
Bayne married Ashton Clapp on Tuesday in Asheville, N.C., spent a couple days in Charleston, S.C., and then made their way to Newton for this weekend's NASCAR Nationwide Series DuPont Pioneer 250 at Iowa Speedway.
The pair have dated for three years, attending high school together. Bayne said his wife has been great through it all, including planning the entire wedding.
"She's a trooper," Bayne said. "Got married on a Tuesday, understanding in racing you have to make sacrifices, and fortunately all our families were able to come and now we're out here ready to race."
Bayne, who became the youngest Daytona 500 winner when he claimed the checker flag in 2011, is 10th in points, entering the race at Iowa Speedway. He has three top-five finishes and five in the top 10.
Bayne has raced three times at Iowa, claiming the pole position and placing fifth in 2010. He was eighth-fastest during Friday night's final practice session. He was still getting acclimated to some of the things that accompany marriage.
"The weirdest thing is getting used to the ring on my finger, and checking for it every time I take my gloves off, because it's a little big," Bayne said. "I've been playing with it all day.
"It's really neat to be married."
Expect a little payback once the season has come to a close. A more appropriate honeymoon will likely be postponed until that time.
"I'm excited about that," Bayne said. "It's a good excuse for a vacation in the offseason."
