Final: Northwestern 38, Iowa 31

C.J. Beathard stepped up under pressure on 3rd and 6 and was picked off by Trae Williams to seal Northwestern's victory.

Iowa's defense was able to force three and out to give the offense the ball at its own 31 with 2:11 remaining, but the Hawkeyes couldn't complete the comeback.

Both teams are now 1-1 in the Big Ten. Iowa is 3-2 overall, Northwestern 2-3.

PREVIOUS DRIVE: BEATHARD SACKED ON THIRD

Ifeadi Odenigbo blindsides C.J. Beathard on 3rd and 6 at the Iowa 46, popping the ball loose with his fourth sack of the game. 

Cole Croston recovered the fumble, but Iowa punts away with 2:46 to go and all three timeouts remaining.

8:10 4th: Northwestern 38, Iowa 31

Iowa is able to answer as LeShun Daniels punches it in from a yard out to get back within a score.

Huge play set up the TD: Jerminic Smith got behind the defense for a 46-yard reception to the Northwestern 3.

Smith could have scored on the play with a better pass from C.J. Beathard, but it ends up not mattering. Now it's up to the defense.

12:06 4th: Northwestern 38, Iowa 24

There's Austin Carr again.

His third touchdown catch of the day is a 25-yarder from Clayton Thorson on a crossing route.

Carr absorbed a hit from Brandon Snyder, then waltzed into the end zone for the Wildcats' biggest lead of the day.

Northwestern came into this game averaging just over 16 points, last in the Big Ten.

2:07 3rd: Northwestern 31, Iowa 24

Justin Jackson broke free for a 58-yard touchdown run to give Northwestern its first lead of the second half.

Jackson made Miles Taylor miss, then outran the rest of the Hawkeyes to silence Kinnick Stadium.

INJURY UPDATE

Play was stopped after a Northwestern kickoff as the Wildcats' Brett Walsh was down and needed to be stretchered off the field.

He's a sophomore linebacker from Monrovia, Calif. He gave a thumb's up leaving the field.

6:15 3rd: Northwestern 24, Iowa 24

Austin Carr with a phenomenal diving grab, keeping a foot in bounds on the side of the end zone to tie this game up.

Clayton Thorson bought time, rolling to his right and giving his top receiver a chance to make a play on third down.

The TD was confirmed after review.

11:29 3rd: Iowa 24, Northwestern 17

Another big punt return for the Hawkeyes, this time from Riley McCarron.

Desmond King drew the Northwestern coverage team on the decoy and McCarron was able to find a seam and take it 30 yards to the Wildcat 28.

Iowa drove to the 7, but couldn't convert a 3rd and 4 and settled for Keith Duncan's 24-yard field goal.

2:51 2nd: Iowa 21, Northwestern 17

Suddenly, Iowa's offense has come alive, with the aid of the Hawkeye defense.

Brandon Snyder forced a fumble for the second straight week and C.J. Beathard and company were able to take advantage.

Beathard hit Riley McCarron for a 15-yard touchdown and Iowa's first lead of the game.

5:02 2nd: Northwestern 17, Iowa 14

The sophomore receiver Hawkeye fans have been waiting for went up and over his defender down the sideline for a big third-down catch at the Northwestern 6.

Akrum Wadley then ran to the left untouched to the end zone to bring the Hawkeyes within three.

10:33 2nd: Northwestern 17, Iowa 7

Clayton Thorson delivered a perfect strike to Austin Carr in the end zone on 3rd and 6 to put the Wildcats up by 10.

A nine-play, 54-yard drive after Iowa really hurt itself with penalties.

Iowa had 2nd and 1 turn into 4th and 21, thanks in part 16 yards in penalties (face mask and false start).

0:50 1st: Northwestern 10, Iowa 7

The Wildcats have had kicking issues this year, but Jack Mitchell is able to convert from 25 yards to give Northwestern the lead back.

Iowa linebacker Josey Jewell made the big stop, stopping RB Justin Jackson for a loss of one on 3rd and 1.

5:07 1st: Iowa 7, Northwestern 7

A bit of deja vu as Northwestern's Hunter Niswander punted a liner to Desmond King, who fielded it on the run and brought it 33 yards to the 5 -- the same place the Wildcats started their scoring drive.

On the next play, Akrum Wadley sprinted around the left side and reached for the plyon and the score.

The TD was upheld after review.

It should be noted this winning field position was all set up by a C.J. Beathard pooch punt (!!!) that was downed at the 1. 

Northwestern then went three and out.

12:20 1st: Northwestern 7, Iowa 0

A dominant first possession on defense and a big punt return help give Northwestern an early edge.

Iowa lost seven yards on its first drive, with C.J. Beathard sacked on 3rd and 7.

Then Flynn Nagel returned a weak Ron Coluzzi punt 46 yards to the 5, with only Coluzzi saving a touchdown.

Two plays later, QB Clayton Thorson punched it in to put the Wildcats in front.
