By Nic Ekland, Xavier juniorCEDAR RAPIDS - The Xavier girls' basketball team represents itself not only on the court, but in the community as well.In early December, the team gathered for one purpose - to serve the community by ringing bells for the Salvation Army.“It's really awesome that we were able to do this as a team,” senior Hayley Deutmeyer said. “We are all so blessed, and I think we take that for granted sometimes. It was a great experience.”The Saints' commitment to selflessness has been apparent throughout the opening stretch of their season. In a fashion similar to their giving attitude off the court, the girls have displayed a team-oriented style of play. The Saints started the season with a hot streak, winning four out of their first five games. On Dec. 3, they were able to get a win in dominant fashion, 57-14, over Waterloo East, holding the Trojans to only two points in the first half. The team had its first setback on Dec. 6, losing 68-49 at home against the Class 5A second-ranked Iowa City High. The girls were quick to bounce back against a tough Dubuque Senior squad with a 52-34 win. The Saints suffered a loss Dec. 13 to Dubuque Hempstead, 38-31. They struggled to get anything going and were held to just seven points in the first half.Senior Abby Watson is excited for the upcoming service events the team will do and said, “After all, it's about everyone but you.”Xavier beat Jefferson, 62-61, Tuesday night and looks to continue its success as it keeps the spirit of giving in full force this holiday season.
